Anger
The Bible does not say it’s wrong to be angry. We all get angry sometimes. Read Ephesians 4:26-32. These verses start off by saying, “Be angry.” But how we express our anger is the most important thing. What do these verses say about how we should conduct ourselves in our anger?
We don’t always express our anger with yelling and fist shaking. Sometimes, we can vent out our anger on others by acting out in resentment or in a bitter spirit. Reread Ephesians 4:31. Notice how bitterness comes before wrath. How can having a bitter spirit escalate into a spirit of wrath?
When you are at work, there is a certain expectation of how you should carry yourself in the workplace, especially during a dispute. Living for the Lord means that we should present ourselves as a servant of the Lord, even when we get angry. Read II Timothy 2:24. What are the attributes God wants us to possess as part of our ‘job description’?
Read Matthew 12:34. Looking back, how often have you said something hurtful to someone you loved? Were those words an accurate reflection of your feelings for that person or your feelings in that moment? How would those words have been different if we spoke out of an abundance of Christ’s heart? Write down what you think Christ might have said differently.
Read James 3:5-6. The things we say in an argument can sometimes hurt as much as what we do. Think about the last time you said something very hurtful because you were angry. Did what you say escalate or calm the argument? Why?

There is an old saying that we were given two ears and 1 mouth for a reason: because God intended for us to listen more than speak. This is even more so true in an argument. When we are more concerned with getting our point across than resolution, we are only going to find ourselves farther from any meaningful healing. Read James 1:19 and fill in the blanks: Be swift to__________, slow to ___________, slow to____________.
Sometimes the end of an argument must be a willingness to walk away. Staying to fight is not always the solution, and there are times we have to allow God to work and not choose to be the hand of judgement. Read 1 Samuel 24:12. How did David decide he would respond to Saul’s aggression?
What we say can fuel anger as easily as trigger it. Read Proverbs 21: 23. What does it say can help prevent an argument?

How did Jonah’s frustration result in petty anger?
What we do in anger is not always a reflection of who we are when we are calm. Sometimes in anger, we can act out in a form of tantrum that is not well thought out. It said we must confess our sins before God and He will, not only forgive, but cleanse us of our sins. Take a moment and bring your sins before the Lord in prayer and ask for forgiveness.
Romans 8:2-3 says that God had to send His son to do what the law could not do. The law was never meant to forgive sin. It was meant to identify it and possibly to condemn. How does God sending Christ to die for your sin show His desire to forgive, and not condemn you?

Read Luke 17:3. Thinking about the previous verse, what do you think it means to rebuke someone who is also a believer and has hurt you? Why is this different than when someone is a nonbeliever?

Some people will seek your forgiveness, and others won’t. Read Luke 6:28. How can praying for someone rather than venting out your anger lead to a better path for you to start forgiving that person?

Read Ephesians 2:8. This verse explains that while faith is a choice, grace is a gift. God gives us grace and an opportunity for salvation when we choose to have faith in His promise. Why is grace a gift only to be received after making the choice to walk by faith?
God is a giver. In Joshua 1, after years in the wilderness, God gave the Israelites a home. What have you witnessed in your own life that shows God’s giving spirit?
Making a promise and fulfilling that promise are two very different things. Read Proverbs 25:14 and the simile of a person boasting about giving. Why do you think this example is used?
In Hebrews 12:28, we are reminded about the amazing gift we are receiving from God. How can we serve God faithfully in gratitude for His blessed redemption?

Thinking about the previous verse, read Titus 1:15. A church’s work, when truly rooted in God, will still have the fingerprint of God in all they do, regardless of how much they grow. Why do you think there are so many “prosperity preachers”, who ask for money with the promise of you getting more money? How can you identify that the doctrine they preach is of God or not? (Read Titus 1:16 for a hint)
When you find a church home that provides you with tools to continue a faithful walk, it is such a blessing. Read 2:7-8. Do these qualities reveal a place that would be a blessed storehouse, or a false one?

In Act 8:18-22, we see a man thinking that paying enough money would earn him the blessing of the same Holy Spirit that moved in the apostles. Why was this a sin?
It’s not by money or by works that we receive God’s blessing. In Titus 3:4-7, we see that God chose to pour abundant grace on us out of love. Think about the last time you gave someone a gift out of love. Did it still feel as good to give that gift as if you had received it? Why?

When we lose a loved one, sometimes it can feel like we are being punished. ‘Didn’t I pray enough? Didn’t I cry enough?’ It is not wrong to bring our hurt and our questions before God. Read Psalms 4:1. How is David’s prayer much like you calling out to God and asking why?
In I Samuel 30:4, it says David and his men cried over the loss of their wives and children until, “they had no strength left to weep.” Do you know this feeling? It wasn’t that he didn’t find truth in them, but they were not being very helpful by pointing out what may or may not have been obvious reasons for his suffering.
